"Gossip" and small circles in psychology

I've had several teachers mention in my classes that the circles in psychology are small, that word gets around on things, and several other comments that make it sound like psychologists (in academia) are all relaying information on a grapevine. How true are these comments? With the field of psychology growing and so many new psychologists getting their degree every year, I've always had a hard time imagining that type of culture.
